The Porte du Roy
The Port du Roy is one of the most famous attractions in the historic town of Mont-Saint-Michel. As soon as you walk through the Port du Roy you come to a place where it seems for a moment as if time has stood still. Everything in this town exudes history. But let’s not forget that the Port du Roy itself is also more than worth it. A beautiful gate in medieval style, which has been used for several different purposes over the years. A gate that also still looks beautiful and in good condition. Really a gate that all tourists like to take a selfie at. This is one of the most famous icons of Mont-Saint-Michel. You can’t miss this gate either. It is the only entrance to the town!
Under the gate
The Port du Roy looks beautiful. Clearly medieval, but very well maintained. This particular gate was built hundreds of years ago to house an army unit. This unit was not only responsible for protecting the city and the abbey, but also for protecting the rights of the king. Hence the name Port du Roy, the Gate of the King. Meanwhile, the army has left the gate long and wide, but it still has an important function. It is the gate that leads you into Mont-Saint-Michel.
If you go to a medieval city, you would of course want a real medieval atmosphere here. This has prevailed in Mont Saint Michel from the first step you take through the Port du Roy. But don’t consider this gate just as an entrance to the town. It is a gate that is itself more than worth your attention. Especially when you consider that kings and queens have walked through this, that makes a visit to this special gate something you should really put at the top of your list.
